Online lectures on “Materials Characterization” – Quy Nhon University

With the aim of updating state-of-the-art techniques commonly used in modern materials characterization, the Department of Chemistry at Quy Nhon University will upgrade the Materials Characterization Course of the current master programme in Theoretical and Physical Chemistry. Within the framework of the MOMA project, Prof. Dr. André Vantomme from KU Leuven, Belgium delivered up-to-date knowledge in materials characterization to students with the teaching assistance of Dr. Nguyen Van Thang, a lecturer of Quy Nhon University.

As a part of the Materials Characterization Course, online lectures on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Scanning Probe Microscopy were successfully delivered to master students majoring in Theoretical and Physical Chemistry at Quy Nhon University via the Zoom platform by Prof. Dr. André Vantomme from December 2021 to January 2022. These lectures gave an introduction to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) with the focus on Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The course covered many modern types of SPM techniques. After these lectures the students were able to understand the principle and applicability of XPS and SPM for a given characterization problem as well as an appropriate measurement procedure.

Master students and PhD students in inorganic chemistry, physics and materials science at Quy Nhon University as well as lecturers from Vietnam Partner Universities also attended these lectures to update cutting-edge knowledge and modern teaching methods in the field of materials characterization. Prior to each lecture, a pdf file of the lecture of Prof. Dr. André Vantomme was sent to the learners and after each lecture, the links of the recorded videos were also sent to them so that learners not only prepare fully for the lectures but also watch them again for better understanding of lecture contents. At the end of these lectures, Prof. Dr. André Vantomme was thanked for his great and enthusiastic lectures.
